Wood Year into Fire Year Is Not a Switch. It Is a Tempering.

This 2026 Lunar New Year not only moves from the Year of the Snake to the Year of the Horse, it shifts the elemental energy from a Wood year, to a Fire year. An elemental change like this provides an opportunity to review and deepen our relationsip with these forces of nature. I personally love working with the elements because they are always feeding, guiding, and influencing the subtle synchronicities of my life.

Wood, as in trees and plants, generally sprouts from the ground and reaches toward the sun. Wood is fed by Water, and feeds Fire. Left on it's own Fire will spread outward horizontally, grabbing hold of the contours of the surface it's on, as well as anything in it's path.

Wood grows upward.

Fire moves outward.

Wood says: I am becoming.

Fire says: I am expressing.

The danger during this transition is assuming that growth automatically knows how to express itself. It doesn’t.

Unseasoned wood burns very fast. It flares, crackles, collapses into ash without offering warmth or light for long. Seasoned wood burns clean and steady. Same material — different preparation.

This is the real work of the Wood → Fire passage: learning how much of yourself to release, and how much to keep contained.

Wood gathers strength through patience, rooting, and flexibility, as I've mentioned here. Wood is stabalized in the Earth, the place that gives growth, stability, structure and containment.

Fire tests that strength through visibility, action, and consequence. Anything that was growing without integrity will be exposed and accelerated once it ignites.

If you pour fuel on a flame that has no containment or direction, you invite a potential disaster.

Fire does not need more fuel right now. We don't generally benefit from fire that burns quickly, then dies out just as fast.

Fire needs clean channels.

Your direction, your aim — your wisdom of how much to give and how much to hold until the path forward opens to you.

That’s why this moment could feel tense for many people. You may already sense a feeling of being stretched or over-extended.

You may feel:

• Energy building with nowhere to go

• Clarity without permission to act yet

• Desire pressing against timing

The Horse is fire in motion — but fire does not begin as flame.

It begins as heat contained.

It is pressure cooking.

Fire needs softer, quieter, more contained tending now. Nature knows this.

As Wood gives way to Fire, expect truth to accelerate.

Your truth. Global truths.

Your inner stability. Societal stability.

Things that used to be tolerable may become irritating.

Things that were vague will beckon a clear decision.

Things that were hidden will seek expression.
